PPI Reference Group

The PPI reference group advises NETSCC on the development of effective ways of working at every stage of the research management process, to support the implementation of the PPI framework. In its first year it will meet four times.

The reference group is co-chaired by Professor Ruairidh Milne, NETSCC’s Director of External Relations and Lester Firkins, who formerly worked in banking and whose personal circumstances led him to become engaged with PPI in the Research process over the past 10 years. Lester currently chairs the Strategy and Development Group of the James Lind Alliance.

The six public members of the PPI reference group are all experienced and skilled in varying aspects of PPI in health research:

Angela Barnard
  • Experience of long term illness and caring
  • Former chief executive of a national voluntary organisation
  • Experienced in research and in leadership development for health and social care
  • Public member of the HS&DR Healthcare Delivery Research Board
Jim Elliott
  • Consultant on health and social care research strategy
  • Former head of research for a national voluntary organisation
  • Experienced in research and development management
  • Member of INVOLVE
Neil Formstone
  • Experienced co-researcher and facilitator in medical research
  • Public member of several national  health/ health research management and development boards
  • Developed and delivers research skills training package
Richard Stephens
  • Former participant in three clinical trials
  • Public member of two clinical trial management groups
  • Public member of several national cancer research bodies
  • 28 years’ experience in school governance 
Graham Tanner
  • Public reviewer for NIHR research programmes
  • Former co-applicant in NIHR-funded research project
  • Chair of national patient safety voluntary organisation
  • Public member of several patient safety steering groups
  • Patient for Patient Safety champion in accordance with WHO Patient Safety programme
Adrian Turrell
  • Former NHS manager with track record in service management & planning, regional management skills trainer & R&D trainer for clinicians
  • Experienced Senior Lecturer in health service research and R&D programme manager
  • Public reviewer for NIHR research programmes
  • Patient with MS

The other organisational members of the reference group are:

Philippa Yeeles
  • Deputy Director of INVOLVE
  • Former joint Director of Operations at the UK Clinical Research Collaboration
  • Qualified social worker, working with mental health services users and carers in both voluntary and public sectors
Elaine Williams
  • Assistant Director, External Relations Directorate, NETSCC
  • Experienced manager in commercial and health sectors
  • Previously practised as an NHS occupational therapist
Alison Ford
  • NETSCC’s PPI Manager.
  • Experienced NHS HR/training & development manager
  • Former development manager, Expert Patients Programme
