      <title>First Woman appointed as Chief Medical Officer</title>
      <description>The government announced yesterday that Professor Dame Sally  Davies has been named as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England, the first woman to hold  the post.<br />
 
		The CMO is the government’s most senior medical advisor,  responsible for providing expert advice on a wide range of issues relating to  the health of the nation, including the handling of health related emergencies. <br />

		Dame Sally, who has been interim CMO since May, will take up  the post with immediate effect. She currently holds the post of  Director-General for Research and Development and Chief Scientific Adviser at  the Department of Health.<br />

		The CMO role carries the rank of Permanent Secretary and is  responsible to the Secretary of State for Health for all of the Department’s  medical matters. The CMO is also the professional head of the Department’s  medical staff and head of the Medical Civil Service.<br />

      <title>New NETSCC Director appointed</title>
      <description><p>NETSCC has appointed Dr Matt Westmore as  Director with responsibility for the management of three of its research  programmes: Health Services Research (HSR), Public Health Research (PHR) and Service  Delivery and Organisation (SDO). </p>
   		<p>As well as leading the directorate, Matt  will become a NETSCC board member with joint responsibility for the delivery of  NETSCC as a whole and to ensure that NETSCC continues to support the  commissioning and delivery of health research that will be of significant  benefit to the UK.</p>
   			<p>Matt has worked at NETSCC for two years,  most recently as an Assistant Director for the Health Technology Assessment  programme (HTA). Before this, he was the Assistant Director of the Strategy and  Development directorate when he joined us in 2009.</p>

      <title>Health benefits of housing regeneration programme assessed</title>
      <description>A study looking at the immediate and longer health benefits of a major housing regeneration programme has been funded by the NIHR PHR programme. <br />
 
		This study aims to measure the immediate and longer term health benefits resulting from a major housing regeneration programme, currently underway, in which social housing is brought up to a national quality standard.<br />
